Your points (and Izaac's) on church/campus tension and how to be a good "campus" group are really helpful. I don't think I thought through the tension well enough when I was on MTS and trying to persuade students to serve.

I'd be interested to hear more reflections on the pro's and con's of a Uni churches (I think you hint at the start there's more).

Does fund raising / support need to a point? As a church how do we allocate our financial support of uni ministry? Is it mercenary of us to provide financial support because our students are part of the uni ministry? 

Thanks for the list, as a local church pastor it's good to know how the strategy behind the ministry so to speak. No doubt Part 3 will be instructive!

If you ONLY give to ministries that benefit your local church that would be a bit yuck.

But a bit of synergy makes sense I think.

Having 'grown up' in a Unichurch and now working for AFES as a campus director where we don't have a Unichurch at present, I find this topic regularly tabled and not so easily one sided. AFES values local sensitivity and that means for us our context will shape the structures. Personally I struggle in our context of not selling campus ministry as your once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and yet the reality is we will always be 'borrowing' students in this job. In any case agree parachurch must always work on its own self harder to make it a better servant, no matter what its local context. We have worked hard to network with local churches, with not overwhelmingly fruitful results, and one church we partner well with. My humble yet perhaps arrogant opinion: maybe student ministry is best done by having more pointed student-friendly churches planted next to uni campuses. Shocking I know since I work for AFES.

In many areas where there aren't strong, student-friendly, ministry-minded, gospel-centred churches, AFES group (and local Christians struggle).

I think the creation of a uni church in those settings is on the right track, but is actually short-sighted. Why not create a good church, full-stop, that happens to be uni friendly. Such a church would be careful to:

- not to entangle the AFES work too closely with the church
- not be too demographically niche
- not assume sole responsibility for interacting with the campus, by try to set the example for other churches.

I raised this to Richard Wilson about Wagga: why did they separate Unichurch from morning church? Why not instead create a distinct AFES group and allow Unichurch and morning church to continue as a bigger, powerhouse church that worked in cooperation with the newly-created AFES group?

To clarify: I struggle with the idea of having parachurch campus groups at all, in contexts like ours, when it would be better to have Powerhouse Student Friendly Church next door with a campus team (the Americans do this well in some places). These are dark thoughts to have as an AFES Staffworker ;)

The "geographical" element is important. Students need a good reason to use the parachurch group rather than their own church. If they go to churches that don't suit their friends - then the parachurch is great. If they go to a church that is a long way from their friends - then the parachurch is great (e.g. big metropolitan areas).
But if their church is near by, and has good ways to help them evangelise their friends, then they're going to struggle to see the value of getting involved with the parachurch.
In such places, I reckon the parachurch might be better focusing on training students to be valuable church members for the rest of their lives. Usually something that their churches won't do very well.

Although, I would add that the campus group has an evangelistic luxury of:

1. Tapping into inter-church student tribes: you and you Christians mates from other churches can bring your mates to the campus group

2. Preaching at a tertiary level: a campus group can preach, long and deep.

3. Integrity: the campus group is a part of university community. It has been created for that very reason. It has a more genuine commitment to the university itself.

1. It's not THE goal, but:
a) Networking benefits people in all sorts of ways, and uni is a unique time to encourage it.
b) Given the subcultural dimension of youth culture, being able to evangelism with other students who may share your subculture will help
c) the buzz of a big group will benefit all the students - whereas without a campus group, only the students from big churches enjoy that buzz

2. Sure. I wonder if 'even better' is quite true though, given that campus groups have more than just 1 hour lunch meetings (consider MYC for a start!)

You could say that a campus group has permission to go harder and deeper in this area, since it isn't as duty-bound to not leave anyone behind. There comes a point where a church must beware of being too exclusive of others.

3. Businesses can sponsor research projects at a university too. But it is more open to being (or being perceived to be) merely for your own benefit.

By contrast a distinct group set up uniquely for the uni is not as open to the charge of serving the interests of some outside group.

I would be equally suspect of a church based theological college or political lobby group or school.

Being able to preach long also means you can deal with big prickly issues. But in doing so, people will get offended and need to be followed up. The (supposed) holistic church should be better equipped to deal with the fall out of long and deep preaching. In other words, just as a longer bridge needs more supports, so does a longer sermon.

3. People will always throw mud, an I don't think many people would see the difference between a campus group and a unichurch. Crossing all the legal "T"s and dotting all the organisational "i"s won't stop people from saying the campus group is just serving an outside group "the church". All the legal stuff helps, but in the end, whether campus or church, they both need to be above reproach as much as possible, so that the mud won't stick.
